Explanation of Grades

Click here for a more detailed explanation of what the letter grades mean.

How will your teachers determine your grades?

At the beginning of each class, each teacher will give you a syllabus--a paper with important information about the class. The syllabus tells you what you will study in the class, what we expect you to learn, the kinds of assignments and tests you will have, and what you need to do to get a good grade. Your teachers all want you to do well in class and will do their best to help you understand the class material, practice it effectively, and do well on quizzes and tests.
In your morning classes, your grade will be based on these types of things:
  • Quizzes or tests
  • Writing assignments or speaking presentations
  • Participation in class discussions and activities
  • Completion of homework
  • A final test or presentation

Successful completion of the program and certificates of completion
  • All students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate of completion at graduation. In order to get a certificate, you need to:
              1. have fewer than 14 hours of absence in all morning classes together
              2. earn passing grades in all your classes
  • Students who miss more than 14 hours of morning classes during the month are considered not to have successfully completed the program, and they will not receive a certificate of completion.
  • If you want to know how many hours you've missed so far, ask the Business English Coordinator in CE1 or using the "Contact Us" tab on this website.
  • Certificates are given out at our graduation ceremony in the afternoon on the last day of class. If you do not attend the ceremony, you can pick up your certificate at the front desk in Building CE3 ask us to mail it to you.

Grades for Elective Classes

Grades in elective classes are Pass/No Pass. To receive a "Pass" grade, you must attend at least 5 class meetings (out of a total of 6) and participate satisfactorily. Elective classes do not usually have homework or tests.

To see your grades after the program ends...

You will be able to see your grades online about a week after the program ends. UCI does not send out paper copies or e-mail reports of grades. To see your grades, go to this website: https://ce.uci.edu/courses/secure/signin.asp. Click on "My Account" and then “Create new account” and type in the information it requests. Be sure to type your name exactly the same as it is in UCI’s official records. Remember your password! After you’ve signed in, click on “View unofficial transcript/grade cards” on the left to see your grades. If you have any trouble, we’d be glad to help you in CE5.

If you think there's a mistake in your grade...

If you disagree with the grade you received, you should do this:
  • Ask your teacher why you received the grade. (Don't be afraid. It's completely OK to do this. Your teacher won't mind.)
  • If you can't reach your teacher, or if you still think there's something wrong, talk to the Business English Coordinator. We'll check into it. You can use the "Contact Us" tab on this website.
