Tips for Success in Learning English

We're glad that you've come to UCI to study English, and we want to help you improve as much as possible. Your time here is very short--only four weeks! Here's some advice from our teachers on how to get the most out of your time at UCI:

  • Speak English! If you want to improve your speaking skill, you need to speak English as much as possible. Even if there are others in your class who speak your language, try to speak to them in English.
  • Be an active learner. Participate in class activities and speak up during discussions. Ask lots of questions. You can do it!
  • Be brave! Try new things, and try to use the language you're learning. It's OK if you make mistakes. That's how you learn.
  • Cooperate with your classmates. Give everyone a chance to speak. Listen carefully when your teacher or another student is speaking, and they'll listen to you.
  • Be a serious student. Come to class on time with all your class materials. Finish your homework and other assignments before class.
  • If you have questions or need extra help, make an appointment to talk to your teacher during his/her office hours.
  • Keep practicing outside of class. Talk to a cashier at Albertson's or a clerk in the bookstore. Watch TV or movies in English. Practice with some of the resources on the "Extra English Practice" tab. Listen to English as much as you can. The more you practice, the more you'll learn!

Here's an interesting website called Antimoon. You can read stories about successful English learners and their advice to others. http://www.antimoon.com/learners/_learners.htm

Sometimes it's difficult and a little scary to study in a new place that's very different from home, but it will be OK. If there's anything we can do to help you or give you advice, come into the ESL Office or send us a message though the "Contact Us" tab.
